Chris Neil was a sixth-round pick from rural Ontario who wasn’t expected to last in the NHL. CN1000 follows the Ottawa Senators enforcer’s 16-year climb to a milestone few players ever reach: 1,000 games as an enforcer with one team.
Very few players reach 1,000 NHL games. Even fewer get there as fighters, and fewer still do it with only one team. Chris Neil grew up in small-town Ontario and was drafted 161st overall by the Ottawa Senators in 1998. Late picks like that usually don’t stick, and enforcers usually don’t last. Neil did both. Over 16 seasons he became one of the most important players in the Senators’ dressing room. He protected his teammates and took on the toughest players in the league, and he became one of the most penalized players in NHL history while earning the respect of the players he fought. CN1000 follows Neil’s journey from his family and the rinks where he started, through junior hockey, the minors and his early years fighting for a place in the NHL, to the night in December 2016 when he played his 1,000th game. Teammates, coaches, opponents and his family describe a player whose value went far beyond his stats: the one who stood up for everyone else and showed up every night. It’s a hockey documentary about a role that is disappearing from the game, and about the cost and commitment behind a career built one shift at a time. The Senators have since retired his No. 25.
